Deir el Qamar (Monastery of the Moon) is an easy on the eye historical small town located in the Chouf Mountains of central Lebanon. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, during the rule of the Maan dynasty, it served as the capital of the Mount Lebanon Emirate. The town has rigorously preserved its historical character; its cobblestone streets, ornate stone houses, and vaulted buildings rank among the finest examples of traditional Lebanese architecture. At its center lies the Fakhreddine Palace and the Fakhreddine Mosque, built in 1493, which is one of the oldest Islamic places of worship still standing in Lebanon. The town also acted as a symbol of religious tolerance, featuring mosques, churches, and an old synagogue situated in close proximity to one another. Deir el Qamar has been a protected heritage area since 1945. The current population is predominantly Maronite Christian. The town's tourist appeal is immense, bolstered by its historical festivals, artisan shops, and the nearby Beiteddine Palace.
