Rayak is a strategically important small town located in the center of the Beqaa Valley, near Zahlé. The settlement is primarily known as the hub of Lebanon's military aviation, housing the Rayak Air Base, the most significant base of the Lebanese Air Force. The former route of the historic Beirut-Damascus railway crosses the town, which once hosted one of the largest railway junctions and maintenance workshops in the Middle East; its ruins are now part of the country's industrial heritage. Throughout its history, the settlement has served as a logistic and military focal point, particularly during the First and Second World Wars when French forces utilized the base. The demographic is mixed, with Christian and Muslim communities living alongside one another. The economy relies heavily on services surrounding the military base, as well as agriculture, with a focus on grain and vegetable cultivation.
