Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is the largest protected area in Lebanon, covering over 5% of the national territory. It extends along the Mount Lebanon range from Dahr Al-Baidar in the north to Mount Niha in the south. The park protects vital remnant forests of the Lebanon cedar (Cedrus libani), with some trees estimated to be over 2,000 years old. The reserve's flora includes over 500 plant species, featuring many rare Eastern Mediterranean endemics. The wildlife is equally diverse, providing a habitat for wolves, wild boars, Syrian brown bears, and numerous bird species traveling along the migration route between Europe and Africa. The establishment of the reserve in 1996 marked a significant milestone in Lebanese environmental conservation. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, balancing biodiversity preservation with sustainable local development.
