Palanok Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Palanok Castle in Mukachevo is a standout example of fortification architecture dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries, situated on a 68-meter-high volcanic hill. The fortress consists of three separate defense levels: the upper, middle, and lower castles, each developed over different historical periods. Its history is deeply linked to the Principality of Transylvania and the Hungarian Rákóczi family, most notably Ilona Zrínyi, who defended the castle for three years against Habsburg forces. After falling in 1688, the fortress served as a strategic military base and later, from 1789 to 1896, as one of the most notorious state prisons of the Habsburg Monarchy. Today, the complex houses a historical museum and various exhibitions documenting the cultural heritage of the Carpathian region. The architecture blends Gothic elements with Renaissance structures and massive bastions designed to withstand the military challenges of the early modern era.
