Antisana Ecological Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Antisana Ecological Reserve is located in the Napo and Pichincha provinces of the central Ecuadorian Andes. Spanning approximately 120,000 hectares, it surrounds the massive, snow-capped Antisana volcano, which stands at 5,704 meters as one of the country's highest peaks. The reserve is of critical importance for the protection of the páramo ecosystem, which functions as a vast natural water reservoir for the capital city, Quito. Its landscape is characterized by wide highlands, deep canyons, and glacial lakes such as the Mica Lagoon. Antisana is recognized as one of the best locations in Ecuador to observe the majestic Andean condor in its natural habitat, hosting one of the species' largest populations. In addition to the condor, the reserve provides a sanctuary for pumas, Andean foxes, and white-tailed deer. The vegetation primarily consists of grasses and cushion plants adapted to extreme high-altitude conditions. Established in 1993, the reserve remains a vital destination for scientific study and nature enthusiasts.
