Unasur Building
The UNASUR Building, located near the Middle of the World monument in Quito, is a striking example of contemporary architecture and engineering. Designed by Ecuadorian architect Diego Guayasamín and inaugurated in December 2014, the building originally served as the headquarters for the Union of South American Nations. Its most remarkable feature is a 56-meter cantilevered wing that projects out into space without external support, making it one of the longest cantilevered structures in Latin America. The construction involved the use of over 1,500 tons of steel and high-strength concrete, engineered to meet stringent seismic safety standards. Inside, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art conference halls, diplomatic offices, and a specialized library intended to foster regional integration. Following Ecuador's withdrawal from UNASUR in 2019, the building's function has evolved to accommodate government departments and educational programs. The exterior is characterized by glass panels and metallic finishes that create a sleek, futuristic aesthetic amidst the Andean landscape. It remains a significant landmark for visitors to San Antonio de Pichincha, showcasing the fusion of bold structural design and modern diplomatic history.
