Mariscal Sucre Airport
The Mariscal Sucre International Airport was officially opened in February 2013, marking a significant milestone in Ecuador's aviation history by replacing the old, hazardous city airport. Located on the Tababela plateau, approximately 18 kilometers east of Quito, the facility sits at an elevation of 2,400 meters above sea level. One of its most distinctive features is its 4,100-meter-long runway, which is among the longest in Latin America, necessary for long-haul aircraft to take off in the thin Andean air. Since its inauguration, the airport has consistently won international awards for excellence in service and infrastructure quality. The terminal is designed to handle over 5 million passengers annually and serves as the primary hub for both domestic and international flights in the country. Additionally, the airport plays a vital role in Ecuador's economy, as its cargo terminal facilitates the export of millions of tons of flowers to global markets each year. The modern architecture of the passenger terminal and the state-of-the-art control tower reflect the country's commitment to modernizing its transport network. The transition to this new location significantly improved flight safety and reduced noise pollution within the capital's urban core.
