Parque Cóndor (Ecuador)

Weather…

Parque Cóndor is a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation center for birds of prey, situated on the Pucará Alto hill near Otavalo at an altitude of approximately 2,800 meters. The facility was established by Dutchman Joep Hendriks to provide medical care and refuge for injured or confiscated birds, including the Andean condor, various eagle species, and owls. Beyond veterinary treatment, the park focuses heavily on environmental education, hosting daily flight demonstrations to highlight the importance of conserving these threatened species. The site provides a commanding panoramic view of Lake San Pablo and the surrounding Imbabura and Cotacachi volcanoes. As an active participant in the national conservation program for the Andean condor, the center is vital for the survival of Ecuador's national symbol. Visitors gain a deep understanding of avian biology and the specific environmental challenges faced by raptors in the northern Andes.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Open year-round, but the best time for raptor flight demonstrations is the dry season from June to September. In the rainy season shows may be cancelled due to rain, but the birds are always visible in their enclosures.
🌅
Best time of day
Flight demonstrations typically occur late morning when thermals develop. Early morning the birds are calmer but can be viewed up close in their aviaries.
📜
Etiquette
Do not touch the birds or make sudden movements near them. Flash photography is not allowed during demonstrations to avoid startling the animals.
🎒
What to bring
A camera with a telephoto lens is recommended to capture birds in flight. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are useful as the terrain is hilly and weather can be changeable.
🧭
Getting there
Parque Cóndor is about 10 km outside Otavalo on the road to Mojanda. Public buses get close, but a taxi or rental car is more convenient for the final uphill stretch.
🦌
What to expect
The birds in aviaries are always visible, but the flight demonstration depends on weather. Arrive early for a good spot and plan at least two hours for your visit.
