Las Lajas Sanctuary (Colombia)

Weather…

The Las Lajas Sanctuary is a striking minor basilica in the Neo-Gothic style, built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River in the Nariño department, near the border with Ecuador. The church stands on a bridge 50 meters above the riverbed and is built directly against the cliff face. According to legend, in 1754, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared on a stone slab to an indigenous woman and her deaf-mute daughter. The current church was constructed between 1916 and 1949, replacing earlier 18th and 19th-century chapels. The structure is regarded as one of the architectural wonders of Colombia and serves as a major pilgrimage site for believers from across South America. The venerated image is not a traditional painting but a natural coloration within the slate rock, possibly formed through chemical processes. Its dramatic setting and intricate architecture make Las Lajas one of the most photographed sites in the country.
