Las Lajas Sanctuary (Colombia)

Weather…

The Las Lajas Sanctuary is an impressive Neo-Gothic basilica built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River in southern Colombia. The current structure was constructed between 1916 and 1949 and is integrated directly into the rock face where a Marian apparition reportedly took place in 1754. The church rises 100 meters from the bottom of the canyon and is connected to the opposite side of the gorge by a monumental bridge. Architecturally, it is renowned for its delicate arches, pointed towers, and magnificent stained-glass windows that create a mystical interior light. The sanctuary is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South America, drawing thousands of devotees annually. Its dramatic location within the rugged Andean landscape makes the basilica one of the most spectacular architectural wonders in the world. Beyond its religious significance, it is a masterpiece of early 20th-century engineering and design.
