Reaching this remote mountainous area usually involves arranging transport from nearby regional hubs like Kumba or Tombel. The dirt roads leading into the forested highlands are notoriously difficult and often require rugged four-wheel-drive vehicles.
Best season
Exploring these wet highlands is vastly more manageable during the relatively dry season from December to February. Heavy, persistent rains characterize the wet season, turning the mountain tracks into impassable muddy torrents.

The environment is defined by dense, humid tropical forests clinging to remarkably steep mountain slopes. Trails are frequently overgrown, relentlessly muddy, and intersected by swollen streams that hikers must carefully ford.
What to bring
Durable, high-traction jungle boots and strong insect repellent are absolutely essential for any foray into these forests. Packing a completely waterproof rainfly and sealing all equipment in dry bags is critical due to the pervasive moisture.
