Getting there
The Nlonako Mountains in western Cameroon are mostly reached via unpaved tracks off the main roads. The journey generally requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle and the help of a local guide.
Best season
The dry season from December to February is most suitable for hiking in the dense forests. During the rainy season, trails become extremely slippery and some areas can be nearly inaccessible.
Terrain & paths
The terrain of the volcanic line is characterized by steep ascents and very dense vegetation. Hikers must be prepared for uneven, root-covered paths and consistently high humidity levels.
What to bring
Waterproof, ankle-high hiking boots are mandatory due to the difficult ground. Strong insect repellent, lightweight long-sleeved clothing, and possibly a machete for undergrowth are advisable.
Parking
There are no regular parking lots in this highly natural region. Vehicles are typically parked in the villages at the foot of the mountains, where tours begin with the local guides.
Safety
Due to the significant biodiversity, which includes snakes and insects, one should always be vigilant. Leaving the main paths without an experienced local guide is considered extremely dangerous.

The duration of expeditions into the Nlonako Mountains ranges from day trips to multi-day trekking tours. To get a good impression of the biodiversity, one should plan for at least a full day.
