💡 Tips

  • Hire a local guide and a 4x4 if you plan to visit Lake Barombi Mbo, as the forest road can be quite rugged.
  • Kumba is a major transport hub; the main bus station area is very chaotic, so keep a close eye on your belongings.
  • English is widely spoken here, but mixing in a bit of Cameroonian Pidgin will quickly win you smiles.
  • Bring a light jacket or sweater; the mornings and evenings can be cooler due to the surrounding forested hills.

Kumba is the largest city of the Southwest Region and a major trading centre in Anglophone Cameroon, set in a fertile basin between the Bakundu forest and the Manengouba highlands. With about 145 000 inhabitants, it is famed as Big Mekete, the eponymous market is one of West Africa's largest, supplying the whole region with food, cosmetics, textiles and small electronics. The economy is dominated by cocoa, palm oil, rubber and the timber trade; the Cameroon Development Corporation runs major plantations here. Highlights include Lake Barombi Mbo, a crater lake with endemic fish species, and the nearby Ekona waterfalls.
