Mount Manengouba is one of Cameroon's most impressive natural landmarks. It is an ancient strato-volcano rising 2,411 meters above sea level along the Cameroon Volcanic Line. The undisputed highlight of this alpine landscape are the Twin Lakes, resting peacefully in a massive caldera. Locally referred to as the "Male" and "Female" lakes, the two bodies of water exhibit striking color differences, one deep blue and the other bright green. They create a mystical landscape surrounded by grassy hills often shrouded in mist. The high-altitude pastures are home to the nomadic Bororo Fulani herders. Meeting these cattle breeders and seeing their simple huts scattered across the slopes adds a profound cultural dimension to the trek. The crisp, cool mountain air provides a refreshing escape from the tropical heat of the valleys below, making the ascent a highly rewarding physical challenge. Trekkers usually start their journey from the nearby towns of Bangem or Melong. The route requires moderate physical fitness and takes several hours, passing through dense forests before opening up into savanna. To see the intense colors of the lakes at their best and to avoid slippery mud trails, the hike should be planned between December and February during the dry season.
