Koupe Massif (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Koupe Massif, dominated by Mount Kupe at an elevation of 2,064 meters, is a prominent volcanic peak in southwestern Cameroon. Geologically, it is an isolated mountain of the Cameroon Volcanic Line that rises steeply from the surrounding plains, standing out with its distinct silhouette. The massif is famous for its dense montane cloud forests, which represent one of Africa's most important centers of endemism. Notably, the Mount Kupe Bush-shrike, an extremely rare bird, makes the mountain a destination for international ornithologists. Culturally, Mount Kupe is of enormous significance to the local Bakossi people; it is considered a sacred site surrounded by numerous legends of spirits and ancestors. The fertile slopes of the mountain are intensively used for coffee and food crop cultivation, which, however, puts constant pressure on the natural forest boundaries. Conservation projects work closely with the local community to promote the preservation of this unique ecosystem through sustainable ecotourism.
