Puttkamer Castle (Prime Minister's Lodge)

The Prime Minister's Lodge in Buea, originally known as Puttkamer Castle, is a magnificent example of German colonial architecture in Cameroon. The building was constructed between 1901 and 1902 by order of Governor Jesko von Puttkamer, who established Buea as the colony's capital due to its mild upland climate. Its design evokes the style of a European country manor and is harmoniously integrated into the lush tropical landscape at the base of Mount Cameroon. Following the end of German rule, the building served various administrative functions before becoming the official residence of the Prime Minister of West Cameroon during the federal era. Surrounded by expansive gardens, the lodge gives spectacular views of the volcano's summit and the coastal plains below. The building symbolizes the colonial transformation of Buea from a small indigenous settlement into a significant administrative hub. Despite numerous political shifts over the past century, the castle's exterior remains largely in its original state, making it one of the best-preserved historical buildings in West Africa. Today, the lodge is a protected landmark and continues to be used for high-level state receptions and official functions.
