Limbe is a port and oil city in the Anglophone Southwest Region, set directly on the Atlantic coast at the foot of Mount Cameroon. Home to about 100 000 inhabitants, it was founded in 1858 as Victoria by British Baptist missionaries, making it one of Cameroon's oldest European-influenced settlements. Limbe hosts the country's only oil refinery (SONARA), Cameroon's third deep-sea port and the renowned Limbe Wildlife Centre, which rehabilitates orphaned chimpanzees, gorillas and drills from across the region. The black volcanic-sand beaches, Down Beach, Mile 11 and Seme Beach, are popular tourist destinations. Other highlights include the Limbe Botanical Garden (founded 1892), the Bota market and remnants of German colonial architecture. The population is predominantly Bakweri, Mokpe and Isubu, with many Francophone and Nigerian communities.
