Gacko Old Town

The Old Town of Gacko and the medieval Kljunač fortress were central seats of power for the Kosača noble family in Eastern Herzegovina. Built in the 14th century, the fortress overlooked the Gacko Basin, protecting caravan routes leading from the coast toward Serbia and Montenegro. Gacko was historically renowned for its livestock farming and served as a vital marketplace for wool and meat products. During the Ottoman era, Gacko was developed into an administrative hub, with the settlement of Merdari becoming the new economic heart of the district. The region's architecture adapted to the extreme climatic conditions of the high plateau, featuring robust stone houses with thick walls. Despite numerous modern conflicts and destruction, Gacko preserves cultural treasures such as Stećci necropolises that testify to its rich medieval past. The town's history is defined by its frontier location and the constant need to resist various shifting imperial powers.
