💡 Tips
- Hire a local guide if you plan to visit the Perućica primeval forest, as entry is restricted without one to protect the ecosystem.
- Prepare for sudden weather changes; even in summer, the high altitude near Maglić means temperatures can drop rapidly.
- Stock up on cash and basic supplies in Foča or Tjentište before heading deep into the park, as ATMs and shops are scarce.
- The Monument to the Battle of Sutjeska in Tjentište is best photographed at sunrise or sunset for dramatic lighting.
🍽 Food
Try roasted meat and vegetables prepared under a metal bell (sač) at local restaurants around Tjentište.
Purchase homemade cheese and kajmak from shepherds in the mountain pastures during summer.
Fresh mountain trout is a staple at riverside eateries near the park entrance.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for stalls or local homes selling mountain honey along the roads leading to the park.
Traditional thick wool socks knitted by local women make for an authentic and practical souvenir.
A heart-shaped alpine lake situated just across the border in Montenegro, accessible via an impressive hike from the park.
Has a wide-open view of the Perućica primeval forest and the Skakavac waterfall without a strenuous hike.

Established in 1962, Sutjeska National Park is the oldest and most prestigious protected area in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It features the country's highest peak, Maglić (2386m), which marks the rugged border with Montenegro. A crown jewel of the park is Perućica, one of Europe's last remaining primeval forests, containing trees over 300 years old and the hidden 75-meter-high Skakavac waterfall. The park also holds deep historical significance; the Valley of Heroes in Tjentište features a massive, brutalist monument dedicated to the WWII Battle of the Sutjeska. Adventure seekers visit for high-altitude trekking, mountain biking, and rafting on the nearby Tara River. With its glacial lakes, deep canyons, and diverse wildlife including bears and wolves, Sutjeska gives an authentic wilderness experience that is increasingly rare on the European continent.
