Tjentište Memorial
The Tjentište Memorial, located in the sweeping mountainous landscape of Sutjeska National Park, also known as the "Valley of Heroes," is an iconic symbol of resistance and sacrifice. Designed by sculptor Miodrag Živković in 1971, this monument commemorates the Battle of Sutjeska (Operation Schwarz) in May and June 1943. It was the bloodiest clash of the Second World War in Yugoslavia, resulting in the deaths of approximately 7,000 Yugoslav partisans. The architecture of the monument is bold and expressive: it consists of two gigantic, abstract concrete wings that reach 19 meters into the sky like shattered rocks. Their dynamic, upward-striving form symbolizes the difficult but ultimately successful breakout of the partisan troops from the enemy encirclement through the gorges of the Sutjeska River. Surrounded by pristine nature, deep forests, and the Zelengora mountain massif, the site inspires profound reverence. An ossuary and the accompanying fresco house of the Spomen-dom complete the historical ensemble.
