Punakha Mustard Fields
The mustard fields of Punakha transform the subtropical valley into a sea of bright yellow blossoms during late winter. This agricultural tradition is deeply rooted in the region's culture, as mustard is one of Bhutan's most vital oilseeds. Sowing typically takes place after the rice harvest in November, with the plants benefiting from the valley's mild climate at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. Between February and March, the fields reach full bloom, providing a spectacular contrast to the green of the surrounding pine forests and the architecture of the Punakha Dzong. Following the bloom, the seeds are harvested and pressed in local mills to produce traditional mustard oil, which is essential in Bhutanese cuisine. The oil is used not only for cooking but also plays a role in religious ceremonies and traditional medicine. These fields contribute significantly to the food security of the local population and support small-scale subsistence farming. For visitors, the blossoming landscape features good photographic opportunities and a glimpse into the seasonal rhythm of Bhutanese agriculture. Sustainable management of these lands ensures the preservation of soil fertility for the subsequent rice cultivation.
