The Royal Botanical Park in Lampelri is Bhutan's first botanical garden and forms an important ecological corridor between the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and the Jigme Dorji National Park. It was officially opened in 2008 and covers an area of 125 square kilometers. The park is particularly famous for its incredible variety of rhododendrons, 46 species of which are native here. The altitude varies greatly, allowing for a wide range of ecosystems, from alpine zones to temperate mountain forests. A beautiful lake, Baritsho Lake, forms the heart of the park and features a tranquil place to linger. Visitors can explore the rich flora and fauna on numerous hiking trails, including rare birds and medicinal plants. The park serves as a center for recreation, scientific research, and nature conservation. It is a living museum of Bhutanese biodiversity.

Getting there
The park is easily accessible via the scenic lateral highway running between Thimphu and Punakha. The well-marked entrance is located just a short distance past the iconic Dochula Pass, making it a convenient stopover.
Best season
Spring, specifically April to June, is the absolute best time to visit when the numerous rhododendron species burst into colorful bloom. Autumn provides crisp, clear skies and excellent conditions for birdwatching.
Terrain & paths
Set in a mountainous area, the park features a network of well-maintained nature trails that wind through dense forests and around a central lake. The terrain includes some gentle gradients and well-built wooden footbridges.
What to bring
Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes equipped with good grip for the forest paths. A warm fleece or light jacket is highly recommended, as the high-altitude air can be surprisingly crisp even on bright, sunny days.
Parking
There is a dedicated, moderately sized parking area located right at the main entrance facility. It provides secure and ample space for private tourist vehicles and minibuses operating along the popular highway route.
Safety
Altitude sickness is generally not a major concern here, but it is wise to walk at a relaxed pace. Stick firmly to the designated trails to protect the fragile alpine flora and to avoid disturbing the native wildlife.
Time needed
Visitors typically spend one to two hours walking around the main lake and exploring the various rhododendron gardens. Birdwatchers and keen nature photographers may comfortably extend their stay to a full half-day.
