Gangtey (Bhutan)

Weather…

Gangtey is a culturally significant village perched on a ridge overlooking the vast Phobjikha Valley. Its main attraction is the Gangtey Goemba, a massive 17th-century monastery belonging to the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism. The temple complex features intricate woodwork, animated religious murals, and a large central courtyard where monks gather. Visitors travel here to explore the monastery's architecture and interact with the resident monks. The village itself consists of traditional stone and timber houses that reflect classic Bhutanese design. The surrounding blue pine forests offer numerous short walking trails, and local eateries serve hearty meals such as phaksha paa, a traditional dish of pork with radishes. The best time to visit is during the autumn months, particularly when the annual Tshechu (religious festival) is held in the monastery's courtyard. Winter is also popular for observing the cranes in the valley below. Gangtey is reached via a two-hour drive from Wangdue Phodrang.
