Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (Bhutan)

Weather…

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a magnificent stupa in the Punakha Valley, regarded as one of the finest examples of Bhutanese craftsmanship and modern architecture. It was consecrated in 2004 (after a nine-year construction period) by the Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck to promote peace and harmony in the world and protect Bhutan from harm. Unlike many other stupas, this chorten was built according to the complex rules of tantric teachings and houses wrathful deities belonging to the Nyingma tradition. The four levels of the structure are adorned with detailed statues and murals symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Reaching the chorten requires a roughly 45-minute hike through lush rice paddies and pine forests, offering one of the most scenic approach routes in Bhutan. From the top platform, visitors can enjoy an unparalleled view of the winding Mo Chhu river and the surrounding mountain landscape. Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is a modern monument that impressively demonstrates the enduring strength of Bhutanese traditions in the contemporary era.
