Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong, officially known as Pungtang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness), is the second oldest and second largest monastery fortress in Bhutan. It was constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the strategic confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Until 1955, the dzong served as the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government. The complex is renowned for its architectural splendor, intricate woodcarvings, and detailed murals depicting the life of Buddha. Punakha Dzong houses Bhutan's most sacred relics, including the Rangjung Kharsapani. Despite suffering from numerous fires, earthquakes, and glacial floods, the fortress has been consistently restored to its original glory. The great assembly hall was the site of the coronation of the first King of Bhutan in 1907 and hosted the royal wedding of the current King in 2011. In winter, the dzong serves as the residence for the central monastic body, which moves here from Thimphu to enjoy the milder climate.
