Asten is located in the central region of Upper Austria, immediately east of Linz at the confluence of the Enns and Danube rivers. The town's history dates back to Roman times when the Astura camp existed here to secure the Danube Limes. Today, Asten is primarily known for the Paneum, an architecturally spectacular building designed by the Coop Himmelb(l)au architectural firm, which documents the history of bread as a wunderkammer. Geographically, the community is characterized by the vast areas of the Linzer Feld and the Danube floodplains. Asten has developed into a significant logistics and commercial location, benefiting from direct access to the A1 West motorway and the B3 Danube Road. The market town features a high quality of life through the combination of industrial dynamism and natural recreational spaces like the Ausee, a popular swimming spot for the entire region. The parish church of Saint James, a late Gothic building with baroque elements, forms the historical center. As part of the Linz agglomeration, Asten is closely linked to the economic development of the Upper Austrian provincial capital, yet retains a unique identity through its independence and cultural projects like the Paneum.
