Carnuntum Archaeological Park (Austria)

Weather…

The Carnuntum Archaeological Park in Lower Austria brings the former Roman metropolis on the Danube to life in a unique way. As the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia, Carnuntum housed up to 50,000 inhabitants in the 2nd century AD and was a strategically crucial military base on the Limes. Today, the park is characterized by globally unique reconstructions of Roman city quarters, built using authentic techniques and materials at their original locations. Visitors can explore a Roman townhouse, a magnificent city villa, and public thermal baths, all of which are fully functional. Highlights include the two amphitheaters and the remains of the gladiator school discovered in 2011. Carnuntum was also the setting for significant political events, such as the Emperors' Conference of 308 AD, which decisively influenced the history of the Roman Empire.
