Bratislava Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Bratislava Castle sits on a hill above the Danube River, dominating the Slovak capital as its iconic landmark. The original castle was built in the 9th century and expanded into a Gothic fortress in the 15th century under King Sigismund of Luxembourg. In the 17th century, it underwent a Baroque reconstruction. After a fire in 1811, the ruin lay abandoned for decades until reconstruction in the 1950s. Today it houses the Slovak National Museum with historical collections. Its rectangular shape with four corner towers is distinctive. The castle area is about 7,500 m². The viewing terrace gives panoramic views over Bratislava, the Danube, and into Austria. The castle was the seat of Hungarian kings in the 16th and 17th centuries when Pressburg (Bratislava) was the capital of Hungary. Nearby St. Martin's Cathedral served as the coronation church. The castle is also a venue for cultural events and a popular tourist destination.
