Devín Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Devín Castle is strategically located at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers on a high rocky cliff, making it one of Slovakia's most significant historical and archaeological sites. The site has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, served as a Celtic settlement in the Iron Age, and later became a Roman military outpost along the Limes Romanus. During the 9th century, the castle grew into a major fortress of the Great Moravian Empire. Following a complex medieval history under Hungarian rule, the castle was blown up by Napoleon's troops in 1809 and has remained a ruin ever since. Today, the area functions as an open-air museum, displaying archaeological finds from the Roman and medieval eras. One of its most iconic features is the Maiden Tower, perched on a solitary rock pinnacle above the river. The castle is a Slovak national cultural monument and a symbol of national identity, especially due to its position on the former Iron Curtain border.
