Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant (Armenia)

Weather…

The Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant, located in the Kotayk Province, is one of Armenia's largest and most strategically important power generating facilities. Built during the Soviet era, the complex consists of several units that originally ran on heavy fuel oil but were later converted to natural gas. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the stability of the national electricity grid by balancing the fluctuating output from hydroelectric plants. In 2013, the complex was significantly upgraded with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art fifth unit, known as Hrazdan-5. Operated by Gazprom Armenia, this new facility is a combined-cycle gas turbine plant that has much higher efficiency and lower emissions than the older blocks. With a capacity of around 480 MW, Hrazdan-5 is one of the most powerful and technologically advanced units in the region. The entire Hrazdan facility underscores Armenia's reliance on imported natural gas for its energy security and its efforts to modernize its Soviet-era generation infrastructure.
