The Erebuni State Reserve, located southeast of Yerevan, is a unique protected area founded in 1981. Its main purpose is the protection of wild ancestors of cereals, especially wild wheat such as Triticum araraticum. This 120-hectare area on semi-desert clay hills is a living gene laboratory and of global importance for agricultural research and biodiversity conservation. The reserve is home to a rich flora, with over 300 plant species, including many rare and endemic ones. In addition to wild cereals, a diverse fauna can also be found here, including rare reptiles like the Armenian viper and numerous bird species. It is a fascinating example of how a relatively small area can play a crucial role in global food security.

The photogenic spring and early summer are undoubtedly the very best times to visit, when the endemic flora and the rare wild wheat species of the Caucasus region are in full, spirited, and colorful bloom.

The pleasant morning hours consistently offer the best natural light for plant observation and photography, well before the intense sun becomes too strong and the rich landscape colors fade in the midday heat.
Etiquette
Please always stay strictly on the clearly marked trails to completely avoid trampling the extremely fragile ecosystem. Picking any plants or collecting seeds is strictly prohibited within this protected conservation area.
What to bring
Particularly sturdy, closed-toe footwear is absolutely mandatory for extensive hiking in this often highly uneven terrain. A dedicated macro lens can be extremely beneficial for capturing the tiny, intricate details of the rare flora.
Getting there
The highly valuable reserve is located conveniently near the Armenian capital and is best accessed by a private vehicle or a taxi, as regular public transportation options directly to this specific conservation site are often quite limited.
