Garni Temple (Armenia)

Weather…

The Temple of Garni is the only standing Hellenistic structure in Armenia and a significant symbol of the country's pre-Christian history. It was built in the 1st century AD, likely around 77 AD during the reign of King Tiridates I, and was dedicated to the sun god Mihr. The temple features a classical Ionic order with 24 columns resting on a high podium. Located on a triangular basalt plateau overlooking the Azat River gorge, the site provided both strategic protection and an impressive panoramic view. In 1679, a devastating earthquake almost completely destroyed the structure, and it lay in ruins for centuries. Between 1969 and 1975, the temple was meticulously reconstructed using original stones, making it one of Armenia's most important tourist landmarks today. The complex also contains the remains of a royal fortress and a Roman bathhouse featuring well-preserved mosaics.
