Paso de los Libres is a strategically vital border city in eastern Corrientes Province, situated on the banks of the Uruguay River. Founded on September 12, 1843, by General Joaquín Madariaga, its name commemorates the passage of 'free men' who crossed from exile to fight against the Rosas dictatorship. The city is connected to the Brazilian city of Uruguaiana by the Getúlio Vargas-Agustín P. Justo International Bridge, making it one of the most important land crossings in the Mercosur trading bloc. A significant volume of trade between Argentina and Brazil passes through its customs facilities, driving a robust local logistics and services economy. Culturally, Paso de los Libres is renowned for its Carnival, which features a unique blend of Argentine traditions and Brazilian samba influences. The city is the birthplace of Arturo Frondizi, who served as President of Argentina from 1958 to 1962. Its riverside location features scenic views and opportunities for water sports and recreational fishing. As a key geopolitical hub, Paso de los Libres stands as a testament to regional integration and cross-border cooperation.
