Tomás Gomensoro is a municipality in the Artigas Department of Uruguay, located near the Brazilian border. Originally known as Zanja Honda ('Deep Ditch'), it was renamed on May 3, 1908, in honor of Tomás Gomensoro, a former president of Uruguay. The town emerged in the late 19th century as a stop on the railway line connecting the region to the rest of the country, which spurred its early development. Today, the economy of Tomás Gomensoro is heavily agricultural. It is an important center for the cultivation of rice and sugarcane, two of the region's main products. Cattle ranching also contributes significantly to the local economy. Despite its small size, with a population of about 2,600 people, it plays a vital role as a service and commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural establishments. Life in Tomás Gomensoro reflects the quiet, rural character of the Uruguayan interior, where community and agricultural traditions are central.
