Mar de Ajó was founded in 1935 and quickly developed into one of the most prominent tourist centers in the Partido de La Costa region. The city's most iconic structure is its 270-meter-long fishing pier, which extends far into the Atlantic Ocean and remains the largest in the province. Along the immediate coastline lies the partially buried shipwreck of the "Margaretha", a German vessel that ran aground here in 1880. The long, sandy beaches provide a stable foundation for mass tourism. The local infrastructure focuses heavily on family tourism, featuring numerous large campgrounds, affordable hotels, and recreational spaces. A local casino and the Luis Rubén Di Palma auto racing track expand the entertainment options beyond the beach. During the summer, the city hosts several cultural festivals, including the National Festival of the Corvina Rubia. It is easily accessible via Provincial Route 11, serving as a primary entry point to the coastal district.
