Fortress of the Cerro (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Fortress of the Cerro (Fortaleza del Cerro), officially known as the Fortaleza General Artigas, sits atop the highest point in Montevideo, the Cerro de Montevideo, offering panoramic views of the city and its bay. Construction of the fortress began in 1809 by order of the Spanish governor Francisco Javier de Elío and was completed in 1839, after Uruguay's independence. Its primary purpose was to protect the city and its port from naval attacks and to surveil the Río de la Plata. The fortress was built around a lighthouse erected in 1802, which was the first lighthouse in the region. The fort's star-shaped design is typical of early 19th-century military architecture. Throughout its history, the fortress served as a military prison and barracks. In 1916, it was declared a National Monument and today it houses the Colonel Fernando Machado Military Museum, which displays a collection of weapons, uniforms, and historical artifacts related to Uruguay's military history. The fortress remains an important historical symbol and a popular scenic viewpoint.
