Villa Gesell is a coastal resort city in Buenos Aires province, which has become one of the most popular summer destinations for Argentines since its founding in 1931. The city was created by Carlos Gesell, who spent years afforesting the coastal sand dunes, primarily with pines and acacias, to stabilize the soil. As a result, the settlement's buildings and streets are now embedded in an extensive pine forest, directly on the coast of the Argentine Sea. The city's long, wide sandy beaches stretch for several kilometers, equipped with wooden boardwalks. During the summer season (December to March), the city's population multiplies. The central Avenue 3 (Avenida 3) turns into a pedestrian street in the evenings, where artisan fairs, street musicians, restaurants, and cafes await tourists. While the city center has a bustling nightlife that mainly attracts young people, the northern and southern fringes (such as Mar de las Pampas) offer a quieter, family-friendly environment. Natural attractions include the Faro Querandí Nature Reserve located south of the city. This zone preserves the original coastal dune system, where visitors can take tours with sand buggies or 4x4 vehicles to the 54-meter-high lighthouse. The spring months are convenient for quieter forest walks and horseback riding on the beach, while warm summer days are best suited for swimming. The city can be reached via Route 11 from Buenos Aires.
