💡 Tips

  • Start your hikes early in the morning to beat the midday heat and ensure you have enough daylight for the return journey.
  • The water from the mountain springs is incredibly cold, but in most places it is safe and refreshing to drink.
  • Pack warm layers; even in the peak of summer, evenings in the mountains can get quite chilly.
  • Power outages can happen; bringing a power bank and a headlamp is highly recommended.

Theth is undoubtedly one of the most magical places in Albania and the gateway to the Theth National Park in the north. The village is located deep within the 'Accursed Mountains' (Prokletije) and is surrounded by jagged peaks rising over 2,500 meters high. For a long time, Theth was completely cut off from the outside world in winter by snow, which allowed a unique culture and traditional way of life to be preserved. The architecture is characterized by massive stone houses with steep wooden roofs designed to withstand heavy snow. A cultural highlight is the 'Kulla e Ngujimit' (Lock-in Tower), a fortified tower where men sought refuge from blood feuds according to the Kanun law. Today, the tower is a museum offering insight into the complex history of the region. Natural wonders are abundant in Theth: the Grunas Waterfall plunges 30 meters, and the 'Blue Eye' (Syri i Kaltër) of Kapre is an ice-cold, deep blue spring set in a dreamlike forest backdrop, first-rate for cooling off after a hike. Theth is a paradise for hikers. The most famous route leads over the Valbona Pass into the neighboring Valbona Valley, a demanding but spectacular day trip. In recent years, the road to Theth has been paved, making access much easier, but the village still retains its wild and original character. Accommodation is usually in traditional guesthouses where visitors are treated to homemade specialties like Flia, local cheese, and fresh lamb. The best time to visit is from June to October when the passes are snow-free and temperatures are good for hiking. A visit to Theth is more than just a trip; it is an immersion into a world where time seems to pass more slowly and the hospitality of the people is as steadfast as the mountains that surround them.
