Vermosh is the northernmost village in Albania, located in the Shkodër County within the Kelmend highlands, deep in the Accursed Mountains (Prokletije). Set in a high alpine valley at approximately 1,150 meters above sea level, it is surrounded by towering peaks reaching over 2,500 meters. A unique geographical feature is the Vermosh River, which is the only river in Albania that drains into the Danube basin via the Drina and Sava rivers, eventually reaching the Black Sea. Historically, its isolated border position with Montenegro meant the region was often at the center of territorial disputes, yet it consistently maintained a fierce cultural independence and traditional lifestyle. The climate is alpine, characterized by long, snowy winters, making Vermosh a premier destination for mountaineering and winter tourism. The inhabitants, the Kelmendi people, are famous for their hospitality and their continued adherence to the traditional Kanun code. The village architecture features sturdy stone houses with steep wooden roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Today, Vermosh is accessible via a scenic modern road and is considered one of the most spectacular ecotourism destinations in the Balkans.
