Drisht Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Drisht Castle is located on a steep hilltop about 10 kilometers northeast of Shkodër, boasting a history that stretches back to the Roman period. The fortifications seen today mostly date from the 13th century, a time when Drisht was a vital administrative and cultural center in medieval Albania. Strategically positioned above the Kir River, the castle served to guard the trade routes connecting the mountainous interior with the Adriatic coast. Remarkably, the fortress still contains inhabited houses within its walls, making it one of the few castles in the region with continuous habitation since the Middle Ages. Its architecture displays a mixture of styles, including Venetian and Ottoman elements added after various sieges and conquests in the 15th century. Despite the damage inflicted by time and warfare, the remains of its eleven towers and massive perimeter walls still convey the city's former strength.
