The Nikaj-Mërtur Regional Nature Park is located in northern Albania within the Albanian Alps, covering an area of approximately 17,500 hectares. The region is defined by extreme topography, featuring rugged limestone cliffs, deep river valleys, and high-altitude alpine plateaus. Elevations vary significantly between the beds of the Nikaj and Mërtur rivers and the surrounding peaks, many of which exceed 2,000 meters. Botanically, the park is of great significance as it hosts extensive beech and pine forests that provide sanctuary for numerous rare animal species. Brown bears, wolves, and Balkan lynxes are still found in these inaccessible mountain sectors. The region is also noted for its traditional pastoral culture, which has adapted over centuries to the harsh high-mountain conditions. Due to its remoteness, a level of biodiversity has been preserved here that has vanished in many other parts of Europe. The park plays a vital role in the European Green Belt cross-border conservation initiative.

Best season
