Mount Jezerca (Albania)

Weather…

Maja Jezercë, standing at 2694 meters, is the highest peak in the Dinaric Alps and is located entirely within northern Albania. The massif consists predominantly of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite, resulting in its distinctive rugged rock structure and deep karst formations. The mountain lies at the heart of the Albanian Alps (Prokletije) and is surrounded by several deeply incised glacial valleys, such as the Valbona and Theth valleys. Although there are no active glaciers today, extensive perennial snow patches and moraine landscapes testify to intense Pleistocene glaciation. Reaching the summit is considered one of the most challenging mountaineering tasks in the Balkans due to steep faces and unstable scree slopes. Botanically, the area is significant for its high-altitude alpine flora, including rare species of the Wulfenia genus.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Starting points for summit attempts are typically the remote mountain valleys of Valbonë or Theth. Access to these base villages involves long drives on scenic, though occasionally challenging, mountain roads.
📅
Best season
High summer (July and August) is the only truly safe time for an ascent. Even in early summer, deep and treacherous snowfields persist at high altitudes, making the climb dangerously icy.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The route traverses extreme alpine terrain. Expect relentless steep climbs, scree slopes, loose rock, and highly exposed sections where using your hands for scrambling is completely unavoidable.
🎒
What to bring
Professional mountaineering boots, helmets to protect against falling rocks, abundant water supplies, thermal layers, and possibly ice axes or crampons depending on early-season snow conditions.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are generally left at guesthouses or designated parking spots in Theth or Valbonë, where multi-day hikers set out on foot. Never leave valuables visible in parked cars in remote areas.
⚠️
Safety
This is an advanced and potentially lethal hike. Hiring an experienced local guide is strongly recommended. Weather shifts abruptly, and getting lost in the rocky labyrinth is a severe threat.
⏱️
Time needed
The complete ascent and descent from the valley floor takes roughly 10 to 14 exhausting hours. Climbers must start extremely early, often before dawn, to complete the round trip before sunset.
