Great Dam of Marib (Yemen)

Weather…

The Great Dam of Marib is recognized as one of the most significant engineering marvels of the ancient world and was the economic backbone of the Sabaean Kingdom. Originally constructed in the 8th century BCE, it was designed to capture the flash floods of Wadi Dhana and distribute water to irrigate a massive oasis. This sophisticated system enabled the Sabaeans to sustain high-yield agriculture in an extremely arid region, fueling the wealth and power of their civilization. Historical inscriptions found at the site document numerous repairs commissioned by various Yemeni rulers over several centuries. The final collapse of the dam in 575 CE was a catastrophic event mentioned in the Quran, leading to the mass migration of many Arab tribes across the peninsula. Today, the massive stone sluice structures on the northern and southern banks remain as silent witnesses to Sabaean technical brilliance. A modern dam, completed in 1986 nearby, continues the ancient legacy of water management in the Marib basin.
