Throughout the centuries, the castle was owned by several prominent noble families, most notably the Frankopans and the Zrinskis, who expanded the complex in the Gothic style during the 15th century. It later acquired its distinctive Renaissance features, including the prominent square tower that serves as the highest point of the structure. From the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy expansive views over the four rivers of Karlovac and the surrounding Kordun region. Today, the castle houses a branch of the Karlovac City Museum and serves as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events. Its architectural integrity makes it a significant example of medieval and early modern fortification techniques in continental Croatia.
