💡 Tips

  • It is best to arrive by car; public transport to this mountain region is limited.
  • Do not expect a bustling ski resort. The former Olympic Centre is largely closed. Come for the unspoiled nature and tranquility.
  • Mountain weather can change quickly. Bring layers of clothing and a rain jacket, even in summer.
  • Begovo Razdolje, the highest-altitude village in Croatia, is an excellent starting point for hikes to the Bjelolasica peak.
  • Stock up on groceries and fuel in the town of Ogulin before you drive up into the mountains, as facilities there are limited.

At 1,534 meters, Bjelolasica is the highest peak of the Gorski Kotar massif and part of the Kapela mountain range. Its name is derived from its characteristic white, grassy ridge, which often remains snow-covered throughout winter. The region is known as the 'Olympic Center of Croatia', as the country's top athletes have trained here for decades. The pristine coniferous and beech forests offer a cool retreat during the hot summer months. The summit, called Kula, provides a far-reaching view of Kvarner Bay, the Velebit mountains, and even as far as the Julian Alps in Slovenia on clear days. Hikers appreciate the well-marked trails leading through the Bijele and Samarske stijene reserve, famous for its bizarre white rock formations. The flora is exceptionally diverse, featuring rare alpine plants that thrive on the vast ridges. Following a fire at the Olympic center's main building, tourism today focuses on private holiday homes and small mountain guesthouses in the villages of Jasenak and Mrkopalj. Culinary-wise, the region is known for game meat, forest berries, and traditional potato dishes. Bjelolasica is easily accessible via the A1 highway (Ogulin exit). The best time to visit is winter for cross-country skiing and sledding, or late summer for extensive hikes in the fresh mountain air.
