Barran Temple (Yemen)

Weather…

The Barran Temple, popularly known as Arsh Bilqis (The Throne of Bilqis), is one of the best-preserved religious sites of the ancient Sabaean Kingdom in Marib. Like the nearby Awwam Temple, it was dedicated to the deity Almaqah and dates back to the 1st millennium BCE. The temple's most striking feature is its row of six monumental square pillars, five of which remain fully standing. The temple complex includes an open courtyard, a sacred altar area, and sophisticated stone drainage systems. Over the centuries, the temple underwent several reconstruction phases, with the current visible ruins mostly dating from the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. The precision of the stonework and the monumental architecture reflect the advanced cultural and technical state of Sabaean society. In the 1990s, the German Archaeological Institute conducted extensive excavations and restoration at the site. Although closely linked in folklore to the legendary Queen of Sheba, archaeological evidence identifies the structure primarily as a major ritual and worship center.
