Ogulin is a pretty town in central Croatia, situated at the junction of the Gorski Kotar and Lika regions, right at the foot of the legendary Mount Klek. The town was founded in the late 15th century by the noble Frankopan family, who built a strategic fortress to serve as a military bulwark against Ottoman expansion. One of Ogulin's most striking natural features is the Đulin Ponor abyss, a 40-meter-deep limestone sinkhole in the town center where the Dobra River vanishes into an underground cavern system. Ogulin is celebrated as the 'Homeland of Fairy Tales' because it is the birthplace of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, a renowned author whose works were inspired by the mystical local landscape. According to folklore, Mount Klek, which resembles a sleeping giant, is the legendary gathering place for witches. Today, the Frankopan Castle houses a heritage museum dedicated to local history, mountaineering, and ethnology. The area is also famous for its traditional Ogulin sauerkraut, a protected regional product. Its combination of historic military architecture and myth-laden nature makes it a unique destination for cultural and outdoor tourism.
