Great Dam of Marib Ruins (Yemen)

Weather…

The ruins of the Great Dam of Marib are an impressive testament to ancient Yemeni engineering and were regarded as one of the wonders of the ancient world. Constructed in the 8th century BCE by the Sabaeans, the dam was designed to capture the seasonal floods of Wadi Dhana and feed a vast irrigation network. This allowed the Marib region to become a flourishing oasis that supported thousands of inhabitants and sustained a powerful civilization. The dam was approximately 580 meters long, consisting of massive earthworks reinforced with stone facing and complex sluice gates. Over the centuries, it was repaired and enlarged multiple times until its final collapse in 575 CE, which triggered the decline of the Sabaean Kingdom and led to significant tribal migrations. The catastrophic failure of the dam is even documented in the Quran. Today, the monumental sluice structures at both ends of the wadi remain standing, illustrating the sheer scale of the original construction. In the 1980s, a new modern dam was built nearby to restore irrigation to the region.
