Modruš Fortress
Modruš Fortress, also known as Tržan-grad, was one of the most significant political and cultural centers in medieval Croatia, serving as the principal seat of the powerful Frankopan noble family. Perched on a steep hill overlooking the historic Josephina road, the fortress reached its zenith in the 15th century when it was elevated to the seat of the Diocese of Modruš. Its strategic location was vital for defending against Ottoman incursions following the disastrous Battle of Krbava Field in 1493. Despite its formidable walls and military importance, the constant pressure from Ottoman raids eventually led to the decline and abandonment of this once-thriving urban center. At its height, the town within the fortifications was a bustling marketplace and a key link for trade between the Adriatic coast and central Europe. Today, the ruins of the fortress and the remains of St. Mark’s Cathedral provide critical archaeological evidence of Gothic architecture and feudal life in the Lika region. The site stands as a testament to the former grandeur of a city that once shaped the political landscape of the Croatian kingdom.
