Gomirje is a historically significant settlement tucked away in the Gorski Kotar mountain region of Croatia, forming part of the town of Vrbovsko in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is best known for the Gomirje Monastery, founded in 1600 by Orthodox monks arriving from the Krka and Dragović monasteries, making it the westernmost Serbian Orthodox monastery in the country. The village's origin is inextricably linked to the Frankopan counts, who granted land to the settlers in exchange for their service as frontier guards against Ottoman incursions during the early 17th century. The central Church of St. John the Baptist was constructed in its current Baroque form in 1719, featuring a prominent bell tower and a rich iconostasis that serves as a masterpiece of regional religious art. Situated at an elevation of approximately 360 meters, Gomirje occupies a fertile valley surrounded by dense forests of beech and fir, which have historically fueled the local timber industry and shaped the community's way of life. Today, the settlement remains a pillar of spiritual life in the region, while also attracting visitors interested in its unique blend of military frontier history, traditional mountain architecture, and the serene natural environment characteristic of the Gorski Kotar highlands.
